On his own composition "Abingdon," the fiddler plays Chet Baker to Haslam's Gerry Mulligan to the extent that the tune could be a newly unearthed slice of 1950s West Coast Jazz. More importantly the two front-liners shift tremolo note clusters among themselves, at points playing in unison a few octaves apart.

An instant composition, the three-part title track is the CD's highpoint, building up to an epiphany on "Epiphany", the briefest of the three linked pieces, but the one most alive with Free Jazz expression. "Hemera", the first section, relies a little too much on the intersection of jagged string swells and perambulating baritone saxophone tones. With bass pedal point and bounces from the drummer to anchor him, however, the fiddler is then able to unleash shrill spiccato, striated pulsations, and layers of vibrating, jagged timbres. More pointed still on the middle tune, Pastor's improvising upticks into staccatissimo; screechy triple-stopping nicely contrasts with note spills from Haslam's tarogato and saxophone. Eventually all textures reach a crescendo which is subsumed, explained and moderated in "Hespera", the suite's final movement. Resonating with the wood-echoing impulses produced when Haslam and Pastor turn to percussion instruments, these patterns give shape to the penultimate chords which define "Hespera", as Pastor's flute-like peeps add additional calming coloration. Finally Kershaw's steady thumps plus saxophone arpeggios provide a definitive and conclusive finale. As the song title states: "What A Difference A Day Makes". Helios Suite definitely merits your attention. Although judging from audience applause, those in attendance at the live date were satisfied, in comparison Holywell Session is an unfortunate misstep by accomplished musicians. -- Track Listing: Helios: 1. It's hard not to admire George Haslam. Musically, his course has been an unexpected one, evolving from West Coast cool (and inevitable comparison to icons like Mulligan and Chaloff) to a very personalised form of free jazz. Geographically, he's ranged from home base in Oxfordshire to Cuba, Argentina and south-eastern Europe (notional birthplace of his increasingly distinctive second horn), always with a sense of creative adventure. If he's not an instantly recognisable stylist or virtuoso, Haslam has the ability to set up encounters and relationships that always seem greater than the sum of the parts.
That's true again here. I wouldn't have picked Haslam from this on a blindfold test, at least not until the tarogato started keening, and even then it would have been a tentative question. The folkish, or perhaps better, vernacular cast to his playing takes on a new quality in the central suite, which manages to avoid almost all the usual "sun" clichés dissonant brass, metal percussion, "hot" intervals in favour of a three part group composition that takes on an almost ritual cast.
The CD's only 39 minutes in length, which I have to say is a perfect duration and more labels/musicians should have the guts to do it. Haslam is, of course, both musician and label boss, which affords him a degree of autonomy. Slam exists in part to put out his own work, and this is one of the best of his projects so far. Pastor's work is thoughtful and intriguingly elided. He's not showy and in his presence Haslam takes on a more reticent cast. Hession, a long-standing partner of the saxophonist's, is one of the best percussionists on the scene, a thoughtful improviser who combines power and pulse with a refreshing richness of detail. Kershaw, though is often the key element in these pieces, something noticeable when he isn't there, providing solid pillars of sound that hold the whole thing up.
The project's notionally dedicated to Italian poet and novelist Cesare Pavese, which doubly recommends it to me, and I've only one quibble. Bookending the suite with two shorter and unrelated pieces slightly dents its impact. Without them, the disc would only have been 23 minutes or so.

Registrato in studio il giorno dopo il live «Holywell Session» (vedi Musica Jazz n. 4/2008), questo Cd documenta un altro aspetto della collaborazione tra Haslam e Pastor. L'affinità tra i due è rafforzata, oltre che da una concezione improvvisativa estremamente aperta, dall'approccio «sassofonistico» che il violinista genovese applica alla timbrica, all'inflessione e al fraseggio del proprio strumento. In quest'ottica risulta particolarmente stimolante l'interazione con il tarogato, di cui Haslam è specialista al pari di Charles Lloyd e Peter Brötzmann. Nonostante l'estrazione del settantenne sassofonista sia radicata nel free britannico, la musica improvvisata del quartetto spazia su territori molto più estesi. Nella propria Marianao, Haslam imprime al tarogato colori degni di un soprano, costruendo fitti intrecci con il violino e smussando i tratti latin più prevedibili. La suite costituisce il momento più alto per varietà di climi ed equilibrio collettivo, toccando vertici liberatori nel movimento centrale. Kershaw e Hession hanno assorbito e adattato alla sensibilità europea l'eredità ornettiana, sulla scia di celebri coppie come Haden-Blackwell e Izenzon-Moffett. Il contrabbassista si inserisce poi a buon diritto nel novero dei grandi solisti inglesi, come Barry Guy, John Edwards e Paul Rogers.

Helios Suiteé, questa, la seconda prova discografica che mette assieme I nomi di eccellenti musicisti del bordo più creativo e mobile del jazz inglese e quello di Stefano Pastor, jazzista italiano che ha a lungo lavorato per liberare il suo strumento dalle incrostazioni «romantiche», se il pensiero va alla musica classica, o «swing», se si pensa a Grappelli e Venuti. Il suono di Pastor, invece, è teo e tagliente, un quieto grido di coraggio che si appoggia molto più sul ricordo delle ance che sui crini, Ornette Coleman in primis. Las Suite del sole, ispirata da un poesia del violinista a sua volta figlia di pensieri de Cesare Pavese è incastonata tra due lunghi brani, ed è davvero un abbacinante viaggio tra luce e ombra, sferza della canicola e sofferta sospensione del buio. Pastorin ja Haslamin tolmesta on saatu aikaiseksi oikea "avantgarde pläjäys". Heidän hämmästyttävä toistensa ymmärtäminen kuroo vahvasti dynaamisen kokonalsuuden tästä yhtyeestä. Täydellisen tehokasta työskentelyä, mikä osoittaa, että kaikki on mahdollista imprvisaation perustuvassa "lättsessä". Täsmällisen epätäsmällista, täydellisellä antaumuksella tehtä musiikkia, kuitenkin puhtaasti sellaisille kuuntelijoille, jotka ovat myyneet sielunsa musiikin mestauksen alttarille. Kuulijalle on tarjoilla melkoinen sillisalaatti jazz-rock nyanssein. Se on kuin ajelehtisi airottomana kumiveneessä kosken kuohuissa tietämättä mitä edessä on. Onko tässä jotain tulevaisuuden epätietolsta havinaa, jota emme vielä ole löikuisuuden vibraattoa. Tavalliset musilikin ystävät varmaan voivat lohduttautua sillä, että se loppuu ennen kuin 40 minuuttia on täynnä. Mutta kuunnelkaa silti, sillä levyllä on myös avian tavallista hyvän tavan mukaista taldolla toteutettua soittoa. Toisaalta valikoitunutpieni "avantgardisryhmä" kuuntelijoita jää hämmästyneenä suu auki huutamaan yhteen ääneen miksi tämä eksentrisen melodian innoittama huuma jo nyt loppui. Il violinista genovese Stefano Pastor torna protagonista con un nuovo disco che lo mantiene ai vertici della sperimentazione jazzistica e non solo, confermando quello che ormai potremmo definire uno stato di grazia, vista la qualità delle sue tante recenti pubblicazioni. E altre sorprese sono in serbo per chi vivrà e vorrà prestare attenzione. Pastor è forse in questo momento l'unico musicista italiano in grado di scrivere nuove pagine da inserire nel libro mastro della storia del jazz. Lo abbiamo già detto, ma ci ripetiamo volentieri: Stefano fa la differenza soprattutto sul piano della strenua ricerca timbrica oltre che su quello tecnico e linguistico. Il suo violino ha un suono inconfondibile, impossibile da dimenticare per originalità e bellezza. Con estrema caparbietà, Pastor cerca e trova un timbro molto simile a quello di uno strumento a fiato: qualcosa di unico nel panorama mondiale. In questa incisione mette ancora più a punto pronuncia e fraseggio, che per velocità e legato sembra quello di un vero e proprio sax, tenore oppure soprano a seconda delle circostanze. Un particolare che fa immediatamente pensare all'ambiguità del "doppio significato" tanto caratteristica del jazz nero-americano: siamo alle prese con un violinista che ragiona e sviluppa il discorso musicale come un sassofonista. Registrato il giorno dopo la bella performance tenuta alla Holywell Room di Oxford (vedi Quaderni D'Altri tempi n. XII), questo secondo cimento di Stefano Pastor per l'etichetta di George Haslam (la Slam) risulta vincente quanto il primo. Qui è all'opera un quartetto, con la conferma di Steve Kershaw al contrabbasso e l'ingresso di Paul Hession alla batteria e percussioni varie. Assenti Harry Beckett (tromba e flicorno) e Richard Leigh Harris (piano). Differenze timbriche non da poco, quindi. Nella prima traccia Marianao si apprezza soprattutto la parte solistica che si ritaglia Haslam al tarogato oltre al notevole interplay che subito il quartetto evidenzia. Un brano costruito anche per dare modo a tutti di mettersi subito in mostra. Segue la Helios Suite in tre parti che mostra evidenti legami di parentela con la rigogliosa musica dell'Art Ensemble of Chicago (e, indietro nel tempo, con John Coltrane). Un poetica musicale notevolmente rielaborata. Hemera, la prima parte è un'intima e intensa preghiera affidata al baritono di Haslam poi affiancato da Pastor per dar luogo a un canto corale, non privo di tormento, preludio alla magmatica Epiphany, intenso corpo a corpo tra gli strumenti. Dialettica che si risolve nella danzante Hespera, con un Pastor (prima al flauto e poi al violino) che vola davvero alto, sintesi autentica di Black Music e tradizione europea. Chiude la deliziosa Abingdon, un quartetto swingante in partenza, tema accattivante poi destrutturato da Pastor che avvia un susseguirsi di duo/trio e di cambi d'atmosfera. Free swing?
