There is a constant Funk element on (3) due to the presence of a Fender Rhodes piano, but the overall sound is more flowing and ambient. The most impressive piece is the title track which starts semi-abstractly before rolling into a furious uptempo stomp notable for some testifying alto by Nick Vintsekvich and Joel Taylor's busy, chatterfunk drumming. Vintsekvich's hot Latin alto on "Dominicana," the creeping Funk groove of "Penguins," and soprano sax dancing over lively piano on "Sad Sunday" are also highlights. Neri Pollastri Singularityè un lavoro dimodern jazzche vede di scena Leonid Vintskevich, pianista di formazione classica ma veterano del jazz russo, e il figlio Nickolai, giovane e promettente sassofonista, coadiuvati da una ritmica statunitense. I due russi si dividono equamente la titolarità dei sei brani, tutti medio-veloci, ricchi diswinge che hanno il pregio di fornire a Nick, l'elemento più interessante del gruppo, ampi spazi per mettere in vetrina le proprie notevoli potenzialità.
Il disco è registrato e missato a Mosca, ma è come se si fosse a New York: sarà lo stile delle composizioni, sarà il fatto che Leonid impiega solo il Fender, sarà la presenza del basso elettrico (peraltro ottimo) di Reed, pressoché nulla di originale emerge da questo esempio di jazz russo. Se non, appunto, la voce strumentale di Nick Vintskevich, che sia al contralto, sia (soprattutto) al soprano sfoggia un bel fraseggio, agilità, idee improvvisative. E anche molta personalità.

Un disque surprenant à quelques égards. D'abord, il s'agit d'un quatuor russe mené par Leonid Vintskevich (Fender Rhodes) et Nick Vintskevich (saxos). Ensuite, Singularity est un disque paradoxal, composé de pièces d'un jazz « soft » et romantique plutôt inintéressant, accolé à des pièces plus fusion, voire frôlant l'avant-garde qui elles ont du mordant. La pièce titre, en particulier, a des tripes, du groove et de l'audace. Les Vintskevich font une bonne équipe, Nick ayant un son doux et tendre qui se marie bien avec le feutré du piano électrique de Leonid.
A surprising record on a couple of levels. First, this is a Russian quartet led by Leonid Vintskevich (Fender Rhodes) and Nick Vintskevich (saxes). Second, Singularity is a paradoxical record made of rather uninteresting "soft" romantic jazz numbers mixed in with fusion-like near-avant-garde pieces with attitude. The title track, in particular, is a gutsy composition with a strong groove. The Vintskeviches make an apt pair, Nick's smooth sound blending in suitably well with the velvety sound of Leonid's electric piano.

The Vintskeviches (keyboard player Leonid, saxophonist Nick) will be
familiar to anyone who's heard their previous Slam recording, ‘Songs
from the Black Earth' reviewed elsewhere on this site, but whereas
that album was appropriately folk-inflected, this one, which pairs them
with the American rhythm section of bass guitarist Kip Reed and drummer
Joel Taylor, is unalloyed jazz fusion. Composing duties are equally shared
between the father (Leonid) and son (Nick), and the resultant material is
mostly slow-building and insistent, relying for its effect as much on
subtle variations of texture and timbre as on outright propulsiveness.
Fusion aficionados might be reminded of a cruelly undersung band of 20-odd
years ago, the Jimmy Giuffre 4, which produced some superb albums for Soul
Note that are more ethereal than .Singularity', but share many of its
musical values: fluent interaction, sinuous grace and supple power.

LEONID VINTSKEVICH SINGULARITY (Slam CD 522).

This is a competent performance with compositional chores shared by the Vintskevich brothers. More than any other, it is the title track that directs the mood of the album but, throughout, improvisational procedures are well organised. Fusion is the code of conduct that directs all concerned and it is for this reason that JJ readers should approach with care. (Barry McRae)

La Slam produce con parsimonia per lo più musicisti inglesi, solo ogni tanto nel catalogo si incontrano anche musicisti di altre parti del mondo, che il produttore, il sassofonista baritono George Haslam, incontra durante i suoi viaggi. Con il Vintskevich Quartet ha pubblicato proprio una cosa di alto livello, un´incisione di un incontro di musicisti russi ed americani che mostra come il jazz elettrico, fatto senza pensare al pubblico ed al commercio sia ancora ricco di impulsi e capace restare al passo con i tempi nell´ambito di una strada maestra che accetta le contaminazioni che incontra. È costituito dai russi Leonid Vintskevich al Fender Rhodes, Nick Vintskevich al sax soprano e contralto e dai due americani Joel Taylor e Kip Reed, rispettivamente alla batteria ed al basso elettrico. Il brano di apertura "In the Nick of Time" è subito di forte impatto: il sassofono soprano di Nick Vintskevich è di una purezza di suono assoluta, perfetto, ad improvvisare su una ritmica che lo incalza senza invadenza. Il Fender Rhodes ed i due musicisti americani sono lì ad ascoltare scalpitando sotto la superfice: è un momento magico colto in studio in cui i musicisti hanno tanto da dirsi. L´album continua con "Penguins in Detroit" senza cedere un attimo di tensione, vario nei ritmi, geniale nello svolgimento che prosegue senza fratture di alcun tipo. C´è la ballad di "Song for Jeny B" che ben si integra nel contesto di un album che sembra fatto tutto di un getto da una band che ha trovato l´ingranaggio giusto per fare musica. Si tratta di un album di un gruppo vero, compatto, che al di là delle notevoli capacità tecniche dei protagonisti ha le qualità artistiche per mettersi fra le migliori produzioni della casa discografica inglese.

Dois russos e dois americanos em quarteto, num disco gravado em Moscovo:os irmãos Vintskevich, Leonid no piano Fender Rodhes e Nick nos saxes alto e soprano, são os lideres deste grupo que conta com Kip Reed em guitarra baixo e Joel Taylor na bateria. "Singularity" é um trabalho muito bem engendrado, em ambiente de fusão e de tímida "avant-garde", movendose Leonid e Nick com desenvoltura em seis temas da autoria de ambos. Nick é um saxofonista maduro e tudo o que Leonid faz tem tarimba. Reed é um seguro baixista e Taylor não esconde a sua queda roqueira. O tema "Singularity" é o exemplo acabado do estilo perseguido, francamente interessante e certificando-nos que o jazz hoje praticado na Rússia é evoluído e tecnicamente rico.
