The album’s most interesting characteristic is Stefano Pastor’s stringwork, which is unique; he somehow makes violin and viola sound like a wind instrument, incorporating the minute slides and dynamic shifts into each attack and decay that I had previously associated only with saxophonists. It might have been nice to have a percussion pallet as broad as Pastor’s, his moment-to-moment inventiveness unfortunately unmatched here. Marc Medwin Cadence July 2008.
ERIKA DAGNINO/STEFANO PASTOR - Cycles (Slam 514; UK) Featuring the violin, viola, percussion & piano of Stefano Pastor with the printed poems of Erika Dagnino. Both Erika and Stefano are Italian, while Stefano can also be heard on a recent Harry Beckett/George Haslam disc also on the Slam label, I hadn't heard of Ms. Dagnino before this. The title track opens with some quietly twisted microtonal violin and stark drums from their guest Maurizio Borgia. Pastor reminds me of Mat Maneri, playing his violin or viola with those unique bent notes. It is a strong, well-balanced duo. On "From the Beginning After ForgettingŠ", Stefano's strange spinning strings are joined by odd, eerie, breath-like vocal sounds and percussion that is used more for its suspenseful sound than for any rhythmic spice. Erika Dagnino's poetry is printed in the liner booklet in English and Italian and it is supposed to be read while listening to this disc. The poetry is often fascinating and somewhat difficult to comprehend, but I find it fits well with the equally fascinating/difficult music on this disc. On "While Your Ear Was LeaningŠ", Stefano's mesmerizing viola is accompanied by an undertow of mutated strings that rise and fall and become harrowing at times. The blend of Stefano's disturbing strings and sustained piano chords on the final piece, "Epilogue," seems like a perfect ending to this overwhelming and provocative disc. Erika Dagnino provides two short quotes from Samuel Beckett at the beginning of the booklet, I can think of no better inspiration for things to come from this disc and the following words.

Luca Canini. AllAbout Jazz, Italia. October 2007. Non ho mai amato le contaminazioni tra improvvisazione e poesia, declamazione e musica interpretata dal vivo. Ho sempre trovato francamente deludenti gli esperimenti in tal senso: o troppo sbilanciati a favore della parola, finendo per deludere e annoiare dal punto di vista musicale (magari sacrificando solisti di valore in posizione di rincalzo), o sostanzialmente ridotti a concerti jazz con spiacevoli e indesiderati intermezzi parlati. Decisamente più intrigante, dal punto di vista della fruibilità, la soluzione adottata dal violinista genovese Stefano Pastor (da poco protagonista di Uncrying Sky ) e dalla poetessa Erika Dagnino, che propongono un’alternativa intelligente alla difficile convivenza tra due arti tanto distanti. Il nucleo concettuale di Cycles, opera edita dall’inglese Slam, è quello di mantenere sostanzialmente separati i due piani discorsivi, ognuno relegato entro il proprio spazio di competenza canonica: la musica nel cd, i testi nel libretto che lo accompagna. Il risultato, a mio parere, premia tale scelta, valorizzando lo splendido rigore intellettuale e la magnifica inquietudine solitaria delle improvvisazioni di Pastor, accompagnato solo nella prima traccia dalla batteria di Maurizio Borgia e nelle successive da qualche spruzzo di overdubbing. Il violino palpita, si contorce dolorosamente, sembra quasi di vederlo sanguinare tra le braccia crudeli di Pastor, sembra di sentirne vibrare la lenta agonia timbrica. È musica di concetto, certo, improvvisazione senza compromessi, ossessiva per certi versi, ma che riesce comunque a ferire, lacerare, tagliare. All’ascoltatore resta il compito, ma non il dovere, di rintracciare i nessi tra improvvisazione, composizione e parola scritta, di scandagliare il libretto e avvicinarsi al peculiare modus operandi del duo, dettagliatamente illustrato nelle partiture-poesie che accompagnano il disco. Forse addentrandosi nei versi contorti della Dagnino, nei flussi di coscienza privi di punteggiatura e nelle violente allitterazioni, chi ascolta avrà la possibilità di scovare ulteriori significati e prospettive inedite. Forse, ma non necessariamente. "For interior voice, musical instruments and objects", recita con splendida formula il sottotitolo del disco.

And now something else. It is a really different work. (...) The music was buildt on Erika Dagnino's poem, that was translated in English to give strength and energy to the whole work. The release is always innovating and ambitious. Radical improvisation could be surely considerated part of jazz' history but this disk is not easy to classify. (...)
