Dave, Alan, Tris and Andy (d.a.t.a., SEE?) met about two years ago and decided to form an improvising collective (Colin guests only on "Don’t Ask" but it works well, so maybe future CDs will be by DACTA or CADAT or TADAC). The cover assures us "all tracks are spontaneous first-take improvisations recorded live in the studio without overdubs or add-ons". Sounds suspiciously like jazz to me.

These performances demonstrate an impressive reach in terms of style and sound, yet all evince a strong identity, combining maturity with a sense of adventure and a dry but impish wit. The musicians’ enjoyment is strongly communicated, and their ability to transform texture or turn the mood on a sizpence ensures that interest never flags.

The swirling "Underture" has a forceful drive founded on a deceptively loose rhythm, developing from blossoming chusters into more reflective passages, until Eason’s murmuring guitar is provoked into an agitated final exchange with the soprano. "Havana Hop" surrounds Harris’s Latino-riffs with minimalist estinati, which then expand and transform themselves, attempting to jostle, goad or seduce the piano part into transmuting into anything from dyspeptic Tayloresque explosions to romantic Ruban rhapsodies. "Soft in The Middle" (passages of which suggest an illusion to Harvest-period Soft Machine) showcases Eason, but increasingly he has to contend with exhilaratingly pushy drumming, funky bass and assertive violin, forcing him to explore more and more playing techniques and tone effects. Oh, and there’s a violin phrase about three-and-a-half minutes in that sounds like the opening of the Hancock signature tune. "Don’t Ask" admits Crawley’s abrasive tenor, but he has to tussle for his space in the longest and most exuberant, nay raucous, cut on the album. "Barbecue" features the soprano against a mesmerising percussive backdrop from drums and, later, plucked strings, although the effect falters in a brief passage where the beat is, perhaps intentionally, deconstructed. "EMC2" is a ballad eerie enough to have been created by Bill Frisell. The splendid closer, "Ash Hill", returns to more abstract territory.

Label boss George Haslam says D.A.T.A. plans to continue performing and recording. For me that’s definitely a promise rather than a threat.

Through a mutual interest in pushing improvised jazz further, they formed a collective that gave them their own unique voice. The band name D.A.T.A. derives from the first initial of each member. D.A.T.A. consists of Alan Eason on guitar, Andy McFarlane on violin, Tris Harris on piano, synth, bass, alto & soprano sax and Dave Hayley on drums. All of the tracks are first take improvisations recorded in the studio with no overdubs. Nice to hear playful improv that has a more positive vibe for a change. The piano, guitar and violin do a swell job of creating riffs together and building them into magical themes that sweep us away. The subdued vibe often works well as the quartet slowly simmers together, weaving melodic fragments into a rich tapestry of warm spirits. - BLG

DATI PROCESSUALI di Cosimo Parisi I giovani musicisti di talento londinesi qui all´opera firmano un´opera abbastanza fresca ed originale, che spazia per i mondi delle musiche improvvisate senza fermarsi in nessun posto, libera da impegni ed onnivora nel divorare cosa le passa davanti. Dai ritmi latini di "Havana Hop" al rock jazz, dal free a strutturazioni estemporanee di stampo mainstream, i quattro (con l´aggiunta dell´ospite sassofonista tenore Colin Crawley su "Don´t Ask Us) si divertono per quasi ottanta minuti, trasmettendo anche all´ascoltatore un senso di piacere e di voglia di fare musica che presso i colleghi non sempre risulta al di là del microfono di registrazione. Dave Hayley batteria, Alan Eason chitarra, Tris Harris piano, synth, sax alto e soprano, basso e Andy McFarlane violino si sono riuniti nel gruppo D.A.T.A., dalle iniziali dei loro nomi. Tutti provenienti da situazioni e generi differenti, hanno deciso di provare cosa succede se si va in studio e si pubblica quello che è stato fatto al momento, senza grossi lavori di riedizione e missaggio a posteriore. Il risultato è di quelli che resta, per la coesione delle esecuzioni, ma anche per la sorpresa che riescono a trasmettere, grazie anche al continuo cambio di strumento di Tris Harris, una specie di joker che dà interessanti direzioni ad una musica che è sempre un ascolto stimolante, utile, perché in possesso di un fascino preciso ed indiscutibile. Le esecuzioni, tutte molto lunghe, sono come una nave alla deriva, cheovunque cerca un momento di approdo senza trovarlo, correndo verso lidiinaspettati alla ricerca di qualcosa. Le si può definiregeniali, in fondo non manca niente in termini di inventiva.

Se l'improvvisazione dei Number si colloca nell'ambito definito "non idiomatico" (che però con gli anni è venuto ad assumere molti tratti dell'idioma a sé), quella dei Data prende spesso a prestito forme riconoscibili: Underture usa fraseggi e ritmi jazzistici (ancorché free), Soft In The Middle ha una chitarra (e a momenti la batteria) jazzrock, Don't Ask Us attacca come un mainstream, Barbecue At World's End sfiora l'ethnojazz, Havana Hop si dichiara fin dal titolo, Emc2 è tra la ballad e gli Henry Cow più morbidi, con una chitarra solista frithiana-milleriana che resta poi tale in Burnt Ash Hill, l'improvvisazione con il maggiore spiegamento di idee in successione.
