Jazz Journal This intriguing collaboration is a natural follow-up to the 1994 Adventures and again finds Haslam in the company of Argentinian musicians. The jewel box notes infer that there are greater freedoms here than is, in fact, the case. Blue For Argentina, in particular, has valid but, nevertheless, quite rudimentary solos by the three saxes, piano and bass. Monita has a puckish conversation between Puntoriero's soprano and Haslam's baritone, while on Kool Ledesma and Haslam conjure up the mood of the old Mulligan/Konits Pacific Jazz dates. Ledesma's appealing, lightweight tone and ambling, fifties West Coast approach is also prominent on Blues No 9 and with Haslam soloing consistently throughout, we have an album that champions quite a few of the old values. RUBBERNECK Another of Haslam's voyages is recorded on this CD. Part 1 was released in 1994 and has come to be very highly regarded. the music on this follow-up dates from 1994 and 1995. The blend is much as before. Haslam plays with local musicians, performing a mixture of tangos, blues and improvised jazz. The result is varied, vibrant, rhythmically compelling and full of fresh ideas and sounds. This is as much due to the Argentine players as to Haslam. A very happy collaboration.
