This set's name is well chosen, as there is a feeling here of some big and intense music waiting to burst out of an awkwardly compressed space. Violinist Andy McFrlane dominates, his bleary, juddering lines scrawling across a carefully delineated landscape of instant drumming and scrunched-up guitar from Dave Heyley and Alan Easton respectively. Tris Harris trebles up on piano, Fender Rhodes and tenor sax, perhaps spreading his varied contributions too widely. Unexpectedly, they do play a mean if nicely wayward beat on the aptly named "Funk Bath" and come over all romantic on the lengthy "Bespoke". Most rewarding.

The acronym D.A.T.A. hides the names of four excellent musicians in London dedicated to research nell'improvvisazione. We are talking about Andy McFarlane (violin), Alan EASON (guitar), Tris Harris (tenor sax, piano, Fender Rhodes) and Dave Hayley (drums). Their first interesting work for the Slam, label production never banal, and based on so-called "creative music", was titled Now Processing (2006), a witness to a process in progress aimed at understanding and all'affinamento 'listening to one another. Today, the operation appears successful and over, because the quartet proceeds with knowledge and talent to compression and transmission of information: apparently the data was properly prepared and systematised. But in reality, the sonic shrapnel, the nervous episodes timbre, the fragments that follow longer think of uncontrollable bit crazy that the method features a zipped file. Una band insolita i D.A.T.A. - nome che proviene dalle iniziali dei musicisti: Dave Hayley batteria, Alan Eason chitarre, Tris Harris piano, Rhodes e sax tenore, Andy McFarlane, sia per la strumentazione che per la musica. Il loro polistrumetismo fa di ogni brano qualcosa di speciale e di diverso, esplorando di volta in volta sia situazioni di tipo creativo che altre in cui il jazz rock alla Mahavishnu Orchestra prende una pillola di modernità, trasportato al giorno d´oggi da chi ne ha realmente capito il messaggio senza pensare a fare da clone di una band assolutamente irripetibile. Provengono da generi diversi, e questo fa già il fascino del disco, che abbatte la barriera degli eserciti di stile per cercare il dialogo possibile. Manca un trombettista, ma lo stesso le tastiere elettriche evocano atmosfere dal periodo elettrico di Miles, o, quando Tris Harris passa al sax tenore, i grovigli con il violino, sostenuti dalla batteria e da chitarre elettriche aggressivi ci sospingono un piena area free. Da idee sempici si passa a soluzioni eccentriche. Sono tutti ricchi di espressività e tecnica, ma la cosa piú importante è che sanno come creare atmosfere coerenti con i mezzi che hanno a disposizione. La mancanza di un basso, elettrico o acustico che sia, sembra far bene alla loro musica. Si conoscono a memoria e sanno sempre in che direzione vanno, strutturando le loro improvvisazioni con logica. Ma è una cosa che si avverte solo ad ascolti successivi, perché loro prendono il pubblico dal lato più emozionale. C´è un entusiasmo nelle esecuzioni che si comunica subito, ed alcune improvvisazioni travolgenti del violinista rappresentano la ciliegina sulla torta.
