| GONE | SLAMCD 278 | ||||||||
| ‘Bird Architects’ Aaron Standon - Alto & Sop sax, Guitar, wooden flute Peter Evans - Electric Violin Mark Turner - Buffalo Bass Marco Anderson - Drums, Keyboards, Soundscapes | |||||||||
|
"Gone" is the group’s return, after many years, to the studio and they have enthusiastically embraced all the opportunities this offered. All the pieces were recorded ‘live’ in the studio and subsequently mixed and remixed by Marco Anderson, creating something that is the essence of the group but also something completely new. The music has developed around an idea that tries to balance freedom and structure providing written passages – tunes and riffs which lead into much freer areas, musical cues then take the ensemble on into the next passage. Aaron Standon (saxophones and Guitar) has been around and back again playing every thing from straight ahead to free jazz. Pete Evans is a classically trained violinist who can be seen performing with a number of orchestras around the south-west. Drummer Marco Anderson is the Groundhogs’ drummer and has also played and recorded with George Brooks, Steve Vai, Dennis Rollins, Andy Sheppard, Carl Orr and John Paricelli, and Buffalo Bassist Mark Turner puts a rock steady punch into the mix from rough trade to a bass looped orchestra. "The ensemble playing contains all the rigor and complexity of jazz but manages to burst through the dogma imposed by some of the J word’s disciples... What follows is a flow of music which takes the ears out of the ordinary, to a place where you do not have to wonder why, merely accept the architecture as a new landscape". Steve Day.

| Songs from the Black Earth | SLAMCD 277 | ||||||||
| Songs from the Black Earth Nick Vintskevitch: Soprano saxophone and alto saxophone Leonid Vintskevitch: Piano Steve Kershaw: Double Bass Petter Svärd: Drums | |||||||||
|
These tracks convey a sense of the wide open spaces of Russia (the home of the "black earth" of the title) ... Leonid Vintskevitch's piano tone is beautifully lucid. His delicate touch makes every note count ... Leonid's piano is amazing: playing the piano strings as well as its keys, and creating his own dazzling counterpoint between left and right hands (Music Web International) A beautiful Russian open-ended avant-garde where Errol Garner does not conflict with Cecil Taylor (Down Beat) |

| FIRST HEARING | SLAMCD274 | ||||||||
| Debut recording by Oxford based trio "3 bpm" ~ Martin Pickett piano, Paul Jefferies double bass, Ben Twyford drums. "captures the spirit of a classic acoustic Jazz trio | |||||||||
| This first CD from Oxfordshire based ‘3bpm’ captures the spirit of a classic acoustic Jazz trio. There is a real organic feel to the recording which takes the listener on a journey from the bluesy Van Morrison opener ‘Cleaning Windows’ through exciting Latin cross rhythms of ‘As Above’ to the delicious dream-like qualities of Ivor Lin’s ‘The Island’. Pickett, Jefferies and Twyford have ample space in which to showcase their musical skills, the band works as a cohesive unit and the three original pieces by Pickett demonstrate a musical maturity that makes the whole album a melodic and rhythmic treat for a wide range of discerning listeners. |

| Red Dispersion | SLAMCD272 | ||||||||
| Aaron Standon - Alto Sax and Guitar; Pete Brandt - Double bass; Steve Harris - Drums | |||||||||
| Red Dispersion is a breath taking new take on harmolodics. This is the trio that picks up the potential of Ulmer and Coleman and runs with it. Alto sax, electric guitar, bass and drums all working right up at the very sharp thin edge of improv. Aaron Standon has been around and back again, he currently plays in the Bird Architects and has also been featured on a new Leo Records CD, Conspiracy of Equals. Drummer Steve Harris comes from Pinski Zoo and ZAUM whilst Pete Brandt has been everywhere from Rough Trade to improvising orchestras. In a sense the past is nowhere near where these musicians reside. Red Dispersion is a coming together of a new, New Thing. This is one of those rare recordings where everything suddenly jumps into the right place at the right time. Potentially Red Dispersion could go down as THE release of 2007. The evidence is in the ears. |
