ROBERTO BELLATALLA QUARTET - Borrowed Time (Slam 239/UK) Featuring Roberto Bellatalla on double bass & compositions, Claude Deppa on trumpet & flugel, Jason Yarde on alto & soprano saxes and Brian Abrahams on drums. We only know of Italian-born UK-based bassist Bellatalla from a few discs with Elton Dean, Paul Dunmall and Nick Evans. Claude Deppa is from South Africa, we know of Claude from fewer discs like two with Louis Moholo and one with Francine Luce. Drummer, Brian Abrahams, once the led District Six from South Africa, amazing band which included Keith Tippett as their guest at one point. So all members of this quartet have connections to Louis Moholo in particular or South Africa in general. Roberto's Quartet actually does capture that wonderful South African free yet funky spirit in all of its glory. Like the Blue Notes blended with Ornette's early 60's quartet on speed. These cats are super-tight and sailing high from the first note! On a few of these songs, they bring it down to a melancholy simmer, like "Just Being", which recalls Ornette's classic "Lonely Woman". Sad, poignant and lovely. Bellatalla's heartfelt acoustic bass is often at the center of each piece, this man has real soulfulness in his hands. Fans of Chris McGregor and the Brotherhood of Breath should love this. BLG
Hi-Fi News & Record Review The victory of Nelson Mandela has produced some strange developments, not least the emergence of 'Smooth Africa', a brand of radio-oriented muzak derived from Hugh Masekela's hi-tech afro-jazz. With Claude Deppa (trumpet) and Brian Abrams (drums) from Cape Town aboard, double-bassist Robert Bellatella has thankfully refused to go that path, instead sticking to the assertive and vibrant sounds of the Township jazz which were brought to the London scene by Chris MacGregor and Dudu Pukwana. Now that those two pioneers have died, this quartet could well become holders of the flame: Bellatella thoroughly inhabits the streetwise, folkish funk demanded by the genre. Newcomer Jason Yarde (from the Jazz Warriors) holds his own in some fiery, lyrical company. Sound is raw, but that suits the music.
Valutazione: * * * * *
